Nursing shortages refer to a situation where there are not enough registered nurses to meet the healthcare needs of a population. The primary downside of these shortages is a compromised patient care, leading to increased risks of medical errors, longer wait times for treatment, and decreased patient satisfaction. This also places a significant strain on existing nursing staff, resulting in burnout, increased stress, and a higher likelihood of nurses leaving the profession.Furthermore, nursing shortages can negatively impact healthcare facility operations by increasing operational costs due to overtime pay and reliance on expensive agency nurses. The reduced capacity of healthcare systems can also lead to delayed or forgone medical procedures, potentially worsening patient outcomes and increasing the burden on emergency departments. Finally, these shortages can exacerbate existing health disparities, as underserved communities may have even less access to qualified nursing care.
